The concept of “family” permeates every aspect of The Swain School community. Faculty, students, parents, and administrators comprise an exceptionally close-knit group. Classes are kept small and, although the curriculum is enriched and challenging, a nurturing atmosphere prevails. Parents are welcomed on the campus and often volunteer. Swain, established in 1929, continues to be guided by the philosophy of its founder, D. Ester Swain: To provide an academic course with superior educational opportunities for young people of ability and character in an atmosphere which not only emphasizes knowledge and skills of learning but also inculcates ethical values.
