Heroism in Maintaining Our Schools

One of the truly touching moments amidst the awful news of COVID-19 has been the outpouring of appreciation for the frontline doctors and nurses who risk their lives to care for coronavirus patients. In Florida, The Palm Beach Post told the story of the neighbor of a medical doctor who wanted to do something.

'When I saw where our state was headed,' she said, 'and my own neighbors being so affected, I thought I just had to do something for those who are taking such a big risk right now.' Last Friday, she did something. At eight p.m., she stood at the end of her driveway and started clapping. She wasn't the only one slapping her palms together. Up and down Washington Road, from driveways, porches and balconies, sustained applause could be heard from other clapping residents.

Like these cheerleaders, I marvel at our public servants who are risking their lives for deathly ill and highly contagious patients.

Though nothing can compare to such heroism in the face of danger, we have seen others serving in less dangerous situations who nonetheless deserve special commendation.
